About Co-founder and Artistic Director

Surjit Nongmeikapam, Co-founder and Artistic Director of NAF was born in Manipur on 2nd March 1986. He studied B.A. Choreography and has worked extensively with Natya Stem Dance Kampni and Natya Maya, Bangalore as a contemporary dancer and traditional dancer. Surjit is well trained in Kathak, Kalaripayattu, Manipuri dance, Contemporary dance and Thang-Ta a form of Manipuri martial arts. He trained in Dance and Movement Therapy from Kolkata Sanved 2010 for a period of three months. He has worked as a Dance Therapist at H2H, Human to Humane, Imphal 2009-2013 and given workshops and awareness to several trauma victims in Manipur.


Surjit continues to explore as an interdisciplinary mover experimenting with physical and emotional aspects his pieces. He is keenly interested in collaborating with visual artists and film-makers. "Black Pot and Movement", directed by Chaoba Thiyam was officially screened in three countries and nominated for the Best Dance Film at Switzerland -2013 (Theater Spektakel, Zurich), India -Experimenta 8th International Festival of Moving Image Art 2013 and Japan Dance and Film -International Dance Film Festival 2015. ‘Black Pot and Movement’ was supported by The Japan Foundation, New Delhi. It was collaboration between Japanese dancer/choreographer Mayuka Ueno Gayer and Surjit. “Underline” another dance film was screened at New Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Imphal and Poza Film (London). He collaborated with Swiss artist Frederic Lombard supported by Pro Helvetia, New Delhi for the Yellow Line Project hosted by Gati Dance Forum, New Delhi. He has collaborated and worked with artists Takao Kawaguchi-Japan, Ryoya Fudetani-Japan, Choy Kai Fai-Singapore, Karolin Ken-Sweden, Chaoba Thiyam-India, Kartik Sood-India.

He has participated at many International and National level artists’ residencies and dance festivals. He has toured and participated in dance festivals around the world in Switzerland, France, Singapore, Belgium, Japan, USA, Germany, Spain, Portugal, UK and others. His solo piece “One Voice” was also nominated for short solo piece at Theatre Spektakel Festival, Zurich in 2013.


He has also won several awards. His ensemble piece NERVES that has five movers including him on stage won PECDA 2014. FOLKTALE, another ensemble piece also received PECDA award 2016 and has successfully secured funding and mentoring for his choreographic works.
